Wenge. [Millettia laurentii]

This timber originates in West Africa.  Zaire, Cameroon and Gabon.  Its natural colour is dark brown with a very pronounced figure.  More popular is the steamed Wenge, almost black in colour. In this state it matches more closely the colour of veneer.   Wenge is used in very high quality floors mainly as a contrast colour or border, high quality shopfitting, cabinetry and by wood working enthusiasts.

It is imported into Australia in small volumes usually in boards of 25mm 38mm and 50mm thicknesses. Wenge is reasonably easy to work weights approx 880kg/m3 air dry.
